What is the best time of year to move home?

Question: what is the best time of year to move home?

Moving, regardless of the month, is an incredibly difficult and stressful process, but there are times in the year where having a flexible schedule can pay of and give you a number of benefits. There are a number of factors to consider when you’re trying to decide your moving date, so be sure to keep these in mind when you’re choosing your particular moving date.

What is the “ideal time”?

There though may be no definitive answer to this, a good time of year to move home would be either in the spring or late fall, a time that’s easier to find a rental company at a fair price. Also, remember that moving home on a weekend will cost you more, as weekend rates are most usually the highest. Good times to avoid are weekends, the start of a new month or generally in the Summer, when moving home is at its peak. Naturally, we will all have different factors that come into play when moving home, like children, your work schedules and even schooling options for your children. Here are the most common factors faced by prospective movers:

Avoiding holidays

Although it may be difficult, avoid moving before major holiday take place: Christmas is a fantastic example of this! A big part of the holidays is spending time with your loved ones and this can become difficult when you’re in the transition period. Be sure to give yourself enough time to settle in your new home before the holiday season begins.

Dodging the school calendar

If you have children at home with you, moving during the school calendar can be a difficult choice, one we recommend you avoid. Although it may be a little more expensive and busier during the Summer, it’s probably the best time for you to move as your children will be out of school and it gives them time to say their goodbyes to their school friends. When setting the date of moving home, be sure to allow a few weeks at your new home in order to allow your children time to unpack, meet their new neighbours and develop friends in time for school. Children are more likely to be prepared for the school year if they take their time to settle in to their new surroundings. Too much change too quickly can be demotivating.

So, what do you think? What’s the best time of year for your to switch homes?

Removals check-list

We have a removals check-list!
We figured we’d help you ensure that you have everything in check and ready for when you move, so we devised the check-list.

Only, this is a quick recap of what we have mentioned in our check-list, highlighting the key features from our check-list.

3-4 weeks prior to the move

Ensure all of your mobile, home-phone, television and internet service providers are notified of the date of your move and your new address.
Do the same with your bank, building society, credit/debit/store card providers and any other services that need to be notified.
If you are doing a solo move, you may want to start sorting what you are and aren’t taking.

3 days prior to the move

You may be planning on taking a large bag for essentials that might be needed on your moving day, including your jewellery and personal possessions that you’d like to keep safe and secure.

The day before

If you drive, you’ll want to park in readiness for the removal vehicle to arrive tomorrow.
Something to do for caution would be to ensure everything that needs to have done, has been and check that all of the fragile items have been labelled clearly.

Moving day

As moving day can be quite a strenuous day for yourself and for the removal men, you might want to leave the kettle out and go about making a cup of tea.
Also, for the last time, check in small spaces and cupboards to make sure that everything has ben removed.

Bon voyage!

What questions should you ask a removal company?

Be sure to get what you want from your removal company

We’ve been asked a range of questions over the years, from the obvious to the somewhat unusual. So, in this concept, we were wondering what questions you should be asking your removal company, regardless of which one you choose. Here’s a list of questions that we thought up between ourselves!

The ‘Pre-Move’ Survey

It’s a good idea to get a full grasp on the job at hand. Ask your removal company to send a surveyor round to your home in order to confirm the true volume of your possessions. Remember that hiding items from the surveyor will only result in an inaccurate estimate for the removal process, so discussing the true volume of the move and your requirements can help you get a grasp on the move. It’s unusual for a removal company to charge you for this process, but it can change depending on the business.

Be sure to ask the company if they can provide a packing service, as this will be an important requirement come moving day. They’ll need to dedicate a considerable amount of time to the packing process, so be sure to tell them of your needs straight away. You can include the cost incurred from this in your quote, but be aware of the cost.

To finish of this process, ask for a written quote so you have proof of the quote if needed.

Ask about the staff members

There’s nothing wrong in asking the experience and skills that the members of staff have. Remember that these will be the people who are in charge of the safety of your valuables, so it’s good to get a grasp on who they are. Are they trained? If they are, who by? All of the questions are important for peace of mind and safety policies.

Also, further questions to ask are: Will the movers be casual, contracted or full time employees? Casual workers are more than often less inclined to worry for your possessions or the responsibility the job has.

What about insurance?

Ask the removal company if you can view the details of their insurance policy. It’s good to check that it’s in date and covers any damages that can be incurred through the moving process. Remember that there are some items which won’t be covered by their insurance policies, so you may need to cover some items yourself. A number of household insurance policies actually don’t cover household times when they’re in transit, so remember this when choosing your insurance policy.

Also, ask if you can see the VOSA number of the removal company. Given that the removal process needs to operate a goods vehicle that sits above a certain weight, you’ll need to be sure that they currently hold a license issued by the Traffic Commissioners.

The details of the move

Remember to get a landline phone number and a full physical address for the business (you shouldn’t accept a PO Box as proof of legitimacy). Non-legitimate removal firms will only operate from a mobile phone, so be sure to avoid these.

Ask how the company would like to receive payment. Again, non-legitimate firms will ask for cash-in-hand payment, will reputable removal companies will have no problem taking cheques or credit cards.

Their previous feedback

Finally, it’s good to remember that you can check out their customer feedback online, as a number of websites exist which will hold reviews for millions of businesses worldwide. Looking at just how they operate and treat their past customers will give you a good general idea of whether or not you wish to deal with them.

Again, it’s important that you employ the services of a removal company that you feel generally comfortable with. Skimping on price could lead to the damage and loss of your personal possessions, so remember that cost doesn’t reflect overall performance.

We've been asked in the past what questions are good to ask a prospective #removal  company, so to give you an idea of what you should look out for, we made a #bloghttp://goo.gl/FZCa7W

Things to do before you move house!

Moving day can cause worry to even the most relaxed of those amongst us, so here’s a list of things you should handle before the dreaded move in order to avoid the worry!

Get your mail redirected

Data protection and identify theft are two things that have become more of a worry with the technical revolution in the past 10-15 years, getting your mail redirected to your new address from the Royal Mail is a service that you MUST use in order to avoid any of your personal information going astray. You can set up a redirect in your mail before the day you move for as long as you want, though 6-12 months seems more than sufficient.

There’s a small charge attached to this service, but no charge is too big when it comes to your important paperwork entering the hands of a criminal. A mail redirect can be set up here.

Let your bank know

Your bank isn’t necessarily at the front of your mind when you’re moving home, yet failing to tell your bank, building society and more about your move can lead to your paperwork, cards, cheque books, PIN numbers and more entering the hands of potential undesirables. Telling these companies in advance allows them to change their details for future reference.

Write to your bank in advance to inform them of your new home address. Doing this before moving day means less stress and new post arriving on the day you move!

Take final meter readings

Ensuring that you only want to pay for the water, electricity and gas used by you is vital when moving home, as failure to make note of your final meter readings could lead to you getting billed for someone else using the utilities.

Your energy companies will want to know the change of address, as so they can move the details across for future billing/usage. You should be able to keep the same gas and electricity companies when you move, depending on your choice.

Change your details on the electoral roll

Updating your information on the electoral roll will make sure that you can still vote in the local and national elections after you have moved home. Ensuring that you are registered on the electoral roll at your new address will help improve your credit rating by an amount, sometimes considerable.

Visit aboutmyvote.co.uk to find out how you can change your electoral records.

Switch your TV license

If you want to watch TV at your new address then you will need to notify the TV licensing company about your change of residence. Be sure to inform them of your new address and tell them the dates in which you are moving to ensure that you are covered from day one.

Visit the TV licence website for more information on how to update your details.

Get your TV and Broadband moved

Most Internet, landline and digital TV providers will allow you to move out with your existing package at no extra cost – providing they can offer the service in your new area.

However, you will need to contact them in advance to be sure of this potential. Try and find out whether it is possible to move your service or not, as you’ll have to move provider if they cannot deliver the same package you want.

Change the address of magazine/DVD subscriptions

If you have a monthly or weekly subscription to any form of media, whether it be your favourite magazine, DVD, brochure or more, then it’s easy to forget to change your details with your new address. Leaving it until after you’ve move isn’t the best idea – especially if your magazine is still going to your old address!

Contact companies that regularly send you pieces of media before you move out, which will ensure that you don’t miss out on things you’ve paid for.

How do you choose the right removal company for you?

Do you actually need a removal company?

You shouldn’t underestimate the amount of physical and mental organisation that it takes to move the contents of your home. All of your belongings, though it may not seem a lot, amount up to a consider collection and moving this to a new home can become very difficult at times. Packing your boxes is one thing, yet getting them around in and out of vans, up and down stairs is another thing completely. How should you choose the right removal company

Shop around

Be sure to get several quotes in advance before any proposed completion date. You should take into account the costs, the service and when the move is able to be conducted. Large removal companies will offer a packing service, so you’ll be confident of everything being taken care of. Many companies will often give an instant online quote, though it’s better to get an assessment from the removal company. This allows them to get an accurate quote, helping you make a choice into a removal company.

Be sure to plan ahead

If you can, be sure to provide any details of your new property with your removal company. They should be aware of what to expect when they arrive at your property. For example, what’s the overall layout, will your furniture fit through the doors, how many flights of stairs and are there any alternative access routes?

Use the time available to you

The quotation process, depending on time frames, can take a couple of weeks. Finding a specific date can take another couple of weeks, so be sure to give yourself time to choose a removal company. Remember, you should book this up weeks in advance, so you should then be sure to look for a removal company a while before you completion date.

Get a recommendation where possible

The best way for you to choose a removal company is to try and gain a positive recommendation from a friend or family member. This will take away most of the uncertainty you may have that surrounds the expectations from the service. If you can’t gain a recommendation, then you can begin to trust your instincts and go with the company that has shown friendliness, helpfulness and professionalism. If they’re a little more expensive, ask around if you can negotiate for a cheaper price. Above all, be sure to have a good relationship with your removal company. As you’re trusting these people with your goods, a good relationship should follow.

Be sure that you have insurance

Many removal companies will already provide you with moving insurance, as this will cover against the loss or breakages of your property. Be sure that this is the case before you book, as this is an important step into your removal. You should also be sure to contact your home content insurer, but be sure to find out if your policy will insure your property.
